Carl Schoonover, age 94, passed away Saturday morning on September 30 at Prestige Assisted Living in Palm Bay, Florida, following a brief illness. The day held special significance to Carl since September 30 is the birthday of his beloved wife of 66 years, Mary, who passed away in 2012.
Carl was born on April 21, 1923, in Wheeling, West Virginia, the son of the late George and Amelia Schoonover. Carl served his country in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II. In 1946, Carl married Mary Ehret and raised his five daughters in Canton, Ohio. He worked as an engineer at E.W. Bliss. In 1969, Carl and the family moved to Lynchburg, Virginia, where Carl worked for the Babcock and Wilcox Naval Nuclear Fuel Division. Carl was an active member of the Catholic Church, as well as the Knights of Columbus, the Elks, and the Moose Lodge.
In addition to his parents, Carl was preceded in death by his wife, Mary, and his sister, Mary Evelyn Kimble. Carl is survived by his brother, Glen Schoonover; his five daughters, Susan (Mike) Belopotosky, Cindy (Mickey) Pollard, Sally Russ, Barb (Rick) Bannister, and Mary Jo (Brent) Myers; his 13 grandchildren; and his 16 great grandchildren.
The family wishes to thank the owner and staff of Prestige Assisted Living for the loving care they provided Carl in his final days.
A Memorial Mass will be celebrated Wednesday, October 4, at 4 p.m. at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Melbourne, Florida, with Rev. Karl Bergin as celebrant. Entombment will follow at a later date at the Florida National Cemetery in Bushnell, Florida.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Carl’s name to Our Lady of Lourdes or to the Melbourne office of VITAS Hospice and Palliative Care.
